The region of Maroneia was once home to the Cicones, an ancient Thracian people. In Homer’s Odyssey, Ismarus—the city of the Cicones—was the first stop on Odysseus’s long journey home from Troy to Ithaca.
Odysseus spared Maron, the priest of Apollo, and his family. In gratitude, Maron presented him with twelve jars of the region’s renowned wine. Odysseus later used this powerful wine to intoxicate the Cyclops Polyphemus, who had trapped him and his companions inside his cave. After blinding the Cyclops, they managed to escape.
Ancient Maroneia later developed into the largest and most important Greek colony in Western Thrace. Its sheltered harbour helped the city flourish as a major trading centre, while the region’s fertile land and rich mineral resources supported its prosperity from antiquity through the Roman period.
