The area of Maronia is the land of the ancient Thracian tribe of Kiκones. Here was the first stop of King Odysseus’s long trip back to his homeland Ithaca.
King Maron gave him as a present 12 amphorae of the famous local wine. With this wine, Ulysses sa ved himself and his comrades from the Cyclop Polyphemus, who hold them as hostages. They drunk him and blinded him, so they could escape.
